Giving up Addictions - Alcohol, Drugs, Abuse and Recovery

Giving up Addictions

Is it possible to give up addictions? No, but it is possible to work toward recovery, i.e. depending on the addiction. Pornography, sex, personality, and relationship addictions are complex, therefore if a person is capable of giving up the addictions depends on additional help and learning.

Substance abuse is the overuse of alcohol, heroin, opium, morphine, crack, cocaine, marijuana, etc. A substance abuser will endure withdrawals, as well as other symptoms especially if their addiction is not satisfied. Yet, other addictions are considered, which are shopping addictions, sex, relationship, eating etc. Alcohol is probably one of the most used drugs, yet it is not on top of the list.

There are many reasons that persons become addicted to alcohol, and some of those reasons include stress, heartbreaks, death or lose of a loved one, family or peer problems, and pain stemming from physical and emotional injuries. Often when the reason is stress, the person is stressed out from work, family, or related problems. In most instances the stress of having family can become devastating to a man, which leads him to drink, especially drinking to escape his problems. This course of escape is never healthy, since it leads to malnutrition, liver damage, kidney failure, heart attacks and so on. Alcohol addictions can lead to eating disorders and/or addictions.

Eating addictions are more of disorders, yet it falls under the topic addictions. The types of eating disorders/addictions including bulimic and anorexia: Bulimics is an abnormal and ongoing craving for foods. This is a serious eating disorder, which often targets females. The addiction is characterized by overeating compulsively, which is usually following self-induced vomiting, through finger input or laxative, or diuretic abuse. The person often feels guilt and depression after enduring a bulimic attack.

Anorexia is the loss of appetite, more specifically a prolonged void of food. Anorexia falls under the anorexia nervosa title, since it is a serious disorder, which includes eating behaviors. The addiction targets women and young adults, and is often characterized by pathological feelings or fears of gaining weight. This fear leads to defective eating patterns, malnutrition, and extreme weight loss.

Other types of disorders include shopping disorders. Shopping addicts like alcoholics/drug addicts often feel ashamed or guilty, yet they deny to someone’s face that a problem exists. Still, alcoholics will often admit they have a problem, yet will avoid help when offered. Shopping addicts frequently shop when they feel unhappy, and often will spend more than what their financial situation permits. Shopping addicts are similar to alcoholics or drug addicts, i.e. they will hide items purchased out of fear, or else never use the items purchased. While alcoholics and drug addicts use their purchases, the similarities of hiding their habits are prevalent in both.

Nicotine is another addiction that leaves no room for giving up addiction easily. The first step to stop smoking is often difficult, yet if the person can wait out the time allotted to remove nicotine from the body, it is possible to quit. It usually takes, according to a few patients, seven days to remove nicotine from the system. The most important thing to do while stopping smoking is to stay away from others that smoke, and stay clear of areas that smokers frequent, i.e. bars, etc. Additional information is available to you if you are trying to stop smoking. One of the valuable tools I’ve found that slows me down from smoking is drinking water.

For the most part if you want to quite any addiction, or else recover from your addiction you will need the strength of character to stop. If you are ready to stop, start thinking in this order: I have accepted that I have an addiction and ready to take the steps to take back my life. I am not willing to allow addictions of any sort to control my mind and body anymore. Today, I am moving toward releasing my body from enslavement.
